You Raise Me Up – Crossover Ensemble Arrangement

You Raise Me Up – Crossover Ensemble Arrangement

In this piece I present a new arrangement of “You Raise Me Up”, composed by Rolf Løvland with lyrics by Brendan Graham — a song whose calm, emotional melody lets it be reshaped in very different musical settings without losing its identity.

The arrangement is built on turning the vocal line into an instrumental dialogue within a Crossover Ensemble, while keeping the original structure and harmony of the work.

The Idea

Rather than presenting the melody as a single line, I broke it apart and redistributed it to become:

  • A conversation between the instruments (Call & Response)
  • A balanced musical texture that keeps its expressive clarity
  • A listening experience closer to “musical storytelling” without words

Choosing the Instruments (Flute & Oboe)

I chose flute and oboe to carry the main melodic line — not only for their range, but for the expressive character of each instrument:

  • The flute brings a sense of air and space, reflecting the spiritual, soaring side of the melody
  • The oboe has a warm, direct tone with a very human intimacy

Together they create a balance between clarity and warmth, which suits a melody that moves between reflection and emotional build-up.

Musical Treatment

In this arrangement I focused on:

  • Keeping the polyphonic interplay between the lines
  • Turning the solo vocal into a clear, gradually unfolding instrumental dialogue
  • Shaping the dynamics to serve the emotional arc of the piece
  • Leaving the original harmony unchanged while reassigning the roles

Use of AI

AI tools were used for:

  • Generating the human voices (Choir Section)
  • Supporting the background with choral layers that add depth
  • Blending the generated voices smoothly with the instrumental arrangement

About the Original

The song is by Rolf Løvland and became known worldwide through many versions, most notably:

  • Josh Groban
  • Westlife

It is a deeply human ballad with a spiritual character and strong emotional impact, which makes it rich material for rearranging.

Who It’s For

This arrangement is for:

  • Ensemble musicians
  • Music teachers
  • Anyone interested in reworking vocal pieces

All while keeping the original identity of the work and presenting it with a contemporary vision that combines instrumental performance with modern tools.
